PENELOPE GAZIN
Guard your butts, people! Today's Mail Order Interview is with buttlovin', uber talented illustraor
Penelope Gazin. Penelope's work is 50% pretty/50% grotesque, which means it's 100% amazing.
Adding to Penelope's street cred is the fact that she works for Fox's ADHD (Animation Domination High-Def) where she makes sweet animated gifs of Miley Cyrus' twerking butt, burger butts, witches butts and pretty much every kind of butt imaginable.
Penelope also plays a mini drumset in a band called Sadwich. The band was started by Penelope and her roommate Natalie James. The duo pump out the catchy, girly rock songs like it's their job. Check them out on SoundCloud:

VANESSA DAVIS
Today's Mail Order Interview is with the very talented and very lovely Vanessa Davis. Vanessa is a quick witted Los Angeles based illustrator, cartoonist and comic artist. She's incredibly talented and, after having met with her for coffee and talking about art and life and being a lady in this crazy day and age, I can say that she is also an incredibly wonderful person.
What could make Vanessa even more amazing?! How about the fact that she's a
published illustrator, cartoonist and comic artist - her most recent publication being
Make Me a Woman.
It was actually Make Me a Woman that introduced me to Vanessa's work. I was a newb to Los Angeles and decided that the best first place for a single lady about town to visit would be a comic book store. While perusing the shelves of Meltdown Comics, I came across a brightly colored image of a girl painting her toenails on the toilet - something I had done hundreds of time in my 27 years on this planet. The title also really grabbed me - could someone else know what it's like to feel old enough to be called a woman, but feel like a kid inside? As I looked through the pages of the book I couldn't believe how much I related to this Vanessa Davis person. She had to be awesome. It was a few months later that I had the privilege of sitting down to coffee with Vanessa confirmed her awesomeness. Vanessa, thanks for what you do and thanks for being you!!

JEFF GILL
Today's Mail Order Interview stars the fabulous, the talented, the pretty tall Jeff Gill. Jeff is an animator based out of Los Angeles, California with an impressive resume. He worked as an animator for South Park for three years and currently holds the position of Director of E-Cards with the very lovable
JibJab Greeting Cards. If you've sent out a holiday or special event JibJab card recently, odds are that Jeff had something to do with it! Mr. Gill is incredibly talented and driven, but did you know that he's also a super awesome dude? I've known Jeff for over a year now and I can say from personal experience that he's the best kind of talented fella - the humble kind. That's why I want to brag about him here! He deserves it.
Jeff has also created some amazing animations that are featured on his
YouTube channel. This one's my personal favorite:
I love this little animation that Jeff created for a public access show that I put together last February. It's a really smart concept - animation over a voicemail - and the animation is just superb. I also have to highlight it because that voicemail you hear.. that goes on and on in a crazy sort of fashion.. was left on Jeff's phone by yours truly. And that animated character? That's me! I feel so honored to have been animated by Jeff! Geeze! So cool.

JULIA POTT
Today's Mail Order Interview is with an artist that I admire immensely. Her name is
Julia Pott and she is a force to reckoned with. Julia is an animator from Brooklyn, New York who was named on the
25 New Faces of Independent Film by
Filmmaker Magazine. Her style is unique and beautiful and her animations are both poignant and humorous examinations of human nature. She's worked with the likes of MTV, Chronicle Books, The Decemberists, and Etsy (to name a few) and her recent animation, "Belly" was chosen as this year's selection at Sundance Film Festival.
The first animation by Julia that ever had the pleasure of seeing was "My First Crush". I fell in love with it immediately. How could I not? Julia combined real audio interviews with quirky animation (of animals!) to tell people's stories of their first crushes. The result is a heart-wrenching, hilarious, visually striking 3 minutes and 51 seconds that is not soon to be forgotten. Check it out here!

I was so excited when he agreed to do a Mail Order Interview for my blog because I absolutely love his work and I think that he's super cool! So, allow me to bring you Mr. Smiley's Mail Order Interview!
CRAIG BARTLETT
Remember the 90's? Remeber Nicktoons? Then odds are that you remember a football-headed kid named Arnold. "Hey Arnold!" was by far my favorite cartoon growing up... and I watched
a lot of cartoons. It had it all - humor, heart, big city life and an obsessive poet/bully with a unibrow... how could you go wrong with that recipe?!
I had the pleasure of interviewing Craig Bartlett, the creator of "Hey Arnold!", this past February in Los Angeles. I always assumed that he was a cool dude because he'd created such a cool show, but after meeting him and chatting for a bit it was obvious that his coolness far surpassed standard levels of coolness on the cool-o-meter. Since his interview, Craig and I have kept in touch and we've even started up an epic game of Draw Something (we're approaching 1,000 drawings...I think we deserve some sort of metal for that, don't you?) When I decided to start up this "Mail Order Interview" feature on my blog, I knew that I wanted to interview Craig because his answers were bound to be FRIGGIN' AWESOME. So, without further ado, I bring you my pal Craig Bartlett's wonderful interview!
Yesterday, I had the privilege of sitting down (via Skype) with one of my favorite artists - the very talented
Chris Piascik. I first learned about Chris and his work through
Flickr. I joined a group on the photo site called "Hand Drawn Type" because I had recently started exploring the art form myself. The group is an awesome place to exchange ideas and see what other artists are up to. Out of all the work in the group's pool, Chris' would always stand out. It's got an edge that makes is dynamic and very interesting to look at. I decided to check out Chris' profile (..the Facebook stalking equivalent of Flickr..) to learn more about him.. Things like whether or not his art was his full-time job and where I could buy
this awesome shirt, designed by Chris. It was there that I learned that Chris resids in my home state - Connecticut! I was so excited to learn this because I honestly feel like cool things (like Chris Piascik) rarely reside in "The Nutmeg State".
Before I moved out to California, I e-mailed Chris asking if he'd be willing to meet for coffee so I could pick his brain about working as an illustrator/graphic designer. He was more than willing (so kind!).. but then, alas, I moved away.. Fortunately, I came back to Connecticut for Christmas at the beginning of the month, so meeting with Chris became again possible! We made plans to meet for coffee, but ended up meeting via Skype instead..which saved us both gas money and was AWESOME! He's such a down-to-earth guy and he was totally willing to answer all of my questions. He gave me some great advice about starting out in the world of illustration. Talking to him really encouraged me to go after my creative passions. Thanks Chris!!
